Commlink
Your lifeline to the Matrix, your team, and every job that goes sideways.
The commlink is the standard personal communication and Matrix-access device in the Shadowrun setting. Roughly analogous to a smartphone or tablet in our world, it is the runner's primary tool for staying in contact with the team, running navigation and identification routines, and—critically—plugging into the Matrix to perform electronic operations. While a cyberdeck offers greater raw processing power for dedicated Matrix work, the commlink wins on portability, versatility, and the ability to handle mundane tasks (calls, messages, payments) alongside electronic combat.
Across the Shadowrun tabletop rules and the video game line (Hong Kong – Extended Edition, Dragon's Breath, Dragon Fall, Returns), the commlink is a core piece of equipment that every runner equips. Its Device Rating determines how many program ports it carries, how well it resists hacking, and how smoothly it interfaces with the Matrix. Choosing the right commlink is one of the first and most consequential build decisions a runner makes.

Lore & Background
In the sprawl of the 2070s, the commlink is as ubiquitous as a wristwatch once was. Every citizen carries one; every runner carries a better one. The device is a flat, palm-sized slab of composite and glass, its display a thin sheet of light that projects holographic interfaces, maps, and contact feeds. A single tap on the surface opens a channel to the Matrix, and the world of daemons, ICE, and data-streams floods in.
Commlinks are manufactured by a constellation of corporations, each offering models at different Device Ratings. A rating-1 unit is a hand-me-down that stutters under a simple trace; a rating-5 or 6 unit hums with enough processing headroom to run multiple programs simultaneously and shrug off a casual hack attempt. The gap between a street-level commlink and a corporate-issue one is the gap between surviving a Matrix run and getting your neural feedback fried. Runners who can afford to buy the better hardware often do, because in the Matrix, a slow device is a dead device.
The commlink also carries a social dimension. It is how a runner calls the fixer, how the team coordinates a breach, how a contact sends a last-second tip about a security rotation. Lose it, and you are not just offline—you are invisible, uncoordinated, and alone in a city that does not want you there. That is why smart runners carry a backup, why they keep a dead-man's switch, and why the commlink is never, ever left unattended in a public space.
In Their Own Story
The rain on the Kowloon overpass turned the neon into rivers of pink and blue. Kael pressed the commlink flat against his palm, felt the familiar cold of the composite housing, and watched the login prompt bloom in soft amber light. Three seconds of silence. Then the Matrix opened like a wound—data streams cascading past in ribbons of green, a daemon the size of a cathedral drifting somewhere above the noise floor.
He had ninety seconds before the trace rolled back. Ninety seconds to find the file, copy it, and pull clean. His fingers moved across the projected interface, port by port, program by program. The commlink hummed against his skin, warm now, working. Somewhere below, the team was holding the door. Somewhere above, a security ICE was already turning its attention toward his signal.
He found the file. Pulled it. Sealed the breach. The Matrix snapped shut, and Kael was just a man on a rain-soaked overpass, holding a small black rectangle that had just kept him alive.
Reader's Guide
The commlink is the baseline Matrix-access device for any runner build. Where a cyberdeck is a dedicated, high-power workstation, the commlink is the all-purpose tool: communication, navigation, ID checks, and Matrix operations in a single palm-sized unit. In Shadowrun's video games, equipping a commlink is a prerequisite for any electronic action; without one, your runner is effectively blind in the Matrix.
Sourcing: Commlinks are available through legal retail (corporate storefronts, street vendors in the sprawl), black-market contacts, and occasionally as mission rewards. Higher Device Rating units cost significantly more and are harder to source on the street, often requiring a fixer contact or a corporate procurement route. Hand-crafted or modded units appear in some game contexts, offering a trade-off between raw rating and reliability.
What makes it iconic: The commlink is the runner's identity in the digital layer. Its Device Rating caps how many programs you can run, how well you resist hacking, and how fast your Matrix operations resolve. A low-rating commlink will bottleneck even the best hacker build; a high-rating one gives you the headroom to layer programs and stay ahead of ICE.
Build fit: Every runner needs one. Hackers and techs benefit most from the highest rating they can afford, as it directly scales their Matrix effectiveness. Combat-focused runners can get away with a mid-range unit, relying on the team's hacker for heavy electronic work, but they still need a functional commlink for coordination and basic ops. Treat it as non-negotiable core gear, not an optional add-on.
Did You Know?
- In the Shadowrun setting, a commlink is deliberately less powerful than a cyberdeck but far more versatile, handling everyday communication alongside Matrix operations in a single device.
- The Device Rating of a commlink determines the number of program ports it can support, making it a hard cap on a runner's electronic toolkit regardless of how many programs they own.
- Commlinks can be hacked by other Matrix operators during a run, potentially locking the runner out of their own device or exposing their position to hostile ICE.
- Across the Shadowrun video games, the commlink is a universal piece of equipment—every runner archetype, from solo to mage, equips one as a baseline for team coordination and Matrix access.
