Combat Specialist

When the plan fails, the Combat Specialist becomes the plan.

Combat Specialist

The Combat Specialist is a core Runner archetype in the Shadowrun universe, representing the operative who handles threats through direct, physical force. Where other Runners rely on hacking, magic, or technical expertise, the Combat Specialist is the one who walks into a room and makes the problem stop moving. They are the muscle, the enforcer, and the last line of defense when a job goes sideways and the only solution left is a loaded weapon or a sharpened edge.

Lore & Background

In the sprawl of 2070s Night City, Los Angeles, or any other megacity where megacorporations run the streets and mages throw fireballs between glass towers, every Runner crew needs someone who can simply hit things. The Combat Specialist fills that role. They are not the hacker cracking the security grid, not the mage calling down a storm spirit, not the tech specialist wiring the payload. They are the one with the cyberarm, the focal myotics, and the reflexes that let them react before a bullet leaves the chamber. Their value is measured in rounds fired, threats neutralized, and teammates kept breathing.

In Their Own Story

The warehouse smelled of ozone and burnt wiring. Kade's focal myotics painted the corridor in amber threat-lines, each one a silhouette that hadn't yet decided whether to open fire. He didn't need to decide. His reflexes had already drawn the pistol, his cyberized left hand had already found the second mag, and his boots had already crossed the threshold before the first round cracked. Three down. Four more. The mage on the far side of the room was still gathering the storm in her palms, still chanting, still *thinking*—and Kade was already past her, already through the back door, already gone. The job was done. The body count would be a line in the invoice. The silence after the last round was the only sound that mattered.

Reader's Guide

The Combat Specialist is the archetype for Runners who solve problems with kinetic force. In the tabletop RPG, they are built around high Body and Reaction, with skill points concentrated in Firearms, Street Combat, and optionally Melee Weapons. Cyberware choices like focal myotics, reflexes, and cyberlimbs (or a full Street Sam conversion) define their ceiling. Bioware offers a subtler path for those who want enhanced stats without the corporate tracking risk.

In the video games, a combat-focused build prioritizes physical attributes, weapon proficiency, and augmentations that reduce reaction time or increase damage output. The key design tension in Shadowrun is the tech-and-magic duality: a Combat Specialist can be outclassed by a single well-timed spirit summon or a Level 5 spell. This means the archetype must also invest in defensive gear, armor, or enough social leverage to avoid fights they cannot win.

Across editions, the Combat Specialist remains a foundational role. Whether in a 2nd-edition street crew or a 6th-edition corporate extraction team, their function is constant: be the reason the other four Runners get to go home. They interact with the magic side of the setting as both target and counter—wearing armor that resists spells, carrying weapons that can harm spirits, and knowing when to run because a dragon is about to sneeze on the block.
