Elemental Spirits

Raw elemental fury bound to a runner's will, blazing through the astral veil.

Elemental Spirits

Elemental Spirits are a core category of summoned entities in the Shadowrun universe, representing the living forces of the natural world—Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and in later editions, Lightning. They inhabit the astral plane and are called into the physical world by mages and shamans to perform tasks ranging from combat support to environmental manipulation. In the video game adaptations developed by Harebrained Schemes, they function as summonable combat companions that players deploy alongside their team of runners.

As one of the most accessible and frequently encountered spirit types, Elemental Spirits sit in the middle of Shadowrun's spirit hierarchy, above minor and major spirits but below totem and dragon spirits. They embody the franchise's central tension between technology and magic: a runner might field a cybernetic arm on one side and a summoned Fire Spirit wreathed in arcane flame on the other, both fighting in the same neon-soaked street battle.

Lore & Background

In the Shadowrun setting, the return of magic after decades of technological dominance reshaped the world's metaphysical landscape. Spirits—non-corporeal beings native to the astral plane—became visible and interactable again. Elemental Spirits are among the most common and powerful of these entities. They are not individual personalities in the way a totem or dragon spirit might be; rather, they are vast, impersonal forces of nature given temporary form. A Fire Spirit is not a character; it is the concept of combustion, heat, and destruction made manifest, answering the call of a mage or shaman who has earned the right to command it.

The distinction between summoner types matters deeply. Shamans, whose spiritual practice is rooted in a personal totem and a connection to the natural world, are limited to summoning elemental spirits and their own totem. Mages, by contrast, draw from the broader magical tradition and can call forth any spirit type, including the far more dangerous totem and dragon spirits. This limitation makes the shaman's relationship with elemental spirits more intimate and ritualistic, while the mage's is more tactical and transactional.

In the video game adaptations, Elemental Spirits are rendered as vivid, semi-translucent constructs that swirl with the energy of their respective element. A Water Spirit might coalesce from rain and mist, a Fire Spirit from embers and heat distortion. They fight alongside the player's team, executing elemental attacks that complement the runners' cyberware and firearms, reinforcing the franchise's signature blend of high-tech and high-magic.

In Their Own Story

The rain over Seattle's lower stacks was turning to ice when Kael raised both hands and whispered the binding words. The air split. A figure no taller than a child materialized from the storm—translucent, crackling with blue-white lightning, its form constantly shifting between a human silhouette and a jagged bolt of raw voltage. It did not speak. It did not need to. It simply turned its gaze toward the three corporate security drones descending from the overpass, and the streetlights in a forty-meter radius blew out in a silent cascade. Kael felt the familiar drain in his temples, the cost of holding the spirit anchored to the physical plane. The Lightning Spirit raised one hand, and the drones fell in a shower of sparks and shattered polymer. The rain resumed. The spirit flickered, thinner now, and dissolved into the grey night. Kael exhaled, his nose bleeding, and walked on.

Reader's Guide

Elemental Spirits in Shadowrun function as a versatile summonable category that bridges the game's magic system with its combat and utility mechanics. In the tabletop RPG, they are divided by element—Air, Earth, Fire, Water, and Lightning (introduced in 6th edition)—each offering a distinct set of services. A Fire Spirit might deliver a powerful ranged energy attack or ignite an area; a Water Spirit could provide healing, create barriers, or manipulate fluid; an Earth Spirit might offer enhanced physical defense or terrain interaction; an Air Spirit could grant mobility, ranged attacks, or sensory enhancement; a Lightning Spirit delivers high-speed electrical strikes and area disruption.

Their role in the tech-and-magic duality is central. A runner team might pair a cybernetic-enhanced gunner with a shaman who summons a Fire Spirit, creating a squad that fields both bullet-hell and arcane fire in the same engagement. In the Harebrained Schemes video games, Elemental Spirits are deployed as active team members with their own attack patterns, areas of effect, and elemental interactions, making them a tactical layer on top of the runners' individual loadouts.

Notable appearances span the RPG's multiple editions and the video game titles Shadowrun: Hong Kong and Shadowrun: Dragon Fall. Across editions, the core identity remains: they are impersonal forces of nature, bound temporarily by a summoner's will, and they answer to the elemental logic of the world rather than to individual personality. Their mid-tier position in the spirit hierarchy means they are powerful enough to matter in most encounters but not so dangerous as to require the extreme precautions needed for totem or dragon spirits.
